Registrations open for the 9th National Design Build And Fly Competition


GIKI is holding the 9th National Design, Build and Fly Competition (DBFC-9) scheduled on 4th – 6th April 2014; after the success of earlier eight Design, Build and Fly Competitions, held in GIKI in 2006-2013. DBFC is a nationwide competetion, organized by the GIK Institute in collaboration with STEM Careers Prgramme, a joint Venture of HEC & PIEAS. AIAA GIKI Chapter and GIK Institute through the STEM Careers Program and HEC invite undergraduate students to participate in the 9th National Design, Build & Fly Competition. The competition will provide a real world aircraft design experience for engineering students by giving them the opportunity to validate their analytic studies. Student teams will design, fabricate, and demonstrate the flight capabilities of an unmanned electric powered, radio controlled aircraft that can best meet the specified mission profile. GIKI students attend London International Youth Science Forum


Haseeb Ahmed and Rizwan Ali khan students of the department of  mechanical engineering in GIKI were selected by the Pakistan Science foundation (PSF) to attend the 55th London International Youth Science Forum (from 24th July - 7th August 2013). The selection was made on the basis of a written exam and an interview taken by a prominent scientist board. The fifteen day event was held at Imperial College London. 350 students from 60 different countries participated this year. The whole tour was fully sponsored by Pakistan Science foundation in collaboration with British council Pakistan. The forum included lectures from prominent scientist from all over the world, visits to industrial sites and a tour to Cambridge and oxford universities. ...

"Virtual Manufacturing" authored by Dr. Wasim A. Khan receives "Best Book Award" by HEC


Professor Dr. Wasim A. Khan has been awarded Best Book Award 2010-11 by Higher Education Commission for his book ‘Virtual Manufacturing’ published by Springer Verlag, UK in 2011. The award was presented in a ceremony held on 25 September, 2013  at HEC Auditorium in Islamabad. Dr. Wasim A. Khan is a distinguished faculty member from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and currently teaches Operations Management at GIKI. His book Virtual Manufacturing presents a novel concept of combining human computer interfaces with virtual reality for discrete and continuous manufacturing systems. The authors address the relevant concepts of manufacturing engineering, virtual reality and computer science and engineering, before embarking on a description of the methodology for building augmented reality for manufacturing processes and systems. Virtual Manufacturing is centered on the description of the development of augmented reality models for a range of processes based on CNC, PLC, SCADA, Mechatronics and on Embedded Systems. Further discussions address the use of augmented reality for developing augmented reality models to control contemporary manufacturing systems and to acquire micro and macro level decision parameters for managers to boost profitability of their manufacturing systems.  ...

GIKI teams develop fuel efficient vehicles for the Shell eco marathon Asia 2013


Two teams from the Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute built eco-friendly vehicles for the Shell Eco Marathon 2013. Team HammerHead ARC developed an electric prototype vehicle, and Team Artaash developed a gasoline vehicle for the urban prototype category. Both the teams from GIKI completed their vehicles, which passed the stringent safety and tehcnical criteria imposed by the marathon rules. As a result of their efforts all members of the teams weer awarded certificates by Shell in recognition of their succesful entry and exceptional work in the design, fabrication and testing of their vehicles. The certificates were given to the teams by Dr. Javed Ahmed Chattha, professor of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering who also commended the teams on their efforts. The Shell Eco-marathon challenges student teams from around the world to design, build and test ultra energy-efficient vehicles. With annual events first in the Americas, then Europe and Asia, the winners are the teams that go the furthest using the least amount of energy. This year the event was scheduled to be held in Malaysia but has been postponed to 2014 in the Phillipines due to hazardous conditions caused by forest fires in the region. ...

MoU worth Rs. 70 million signed with Fatima Industries for lab equipment


The Society for the Promotion of Engineering Sciences and Technology in Pakistan (SOPREST) and Fatima Group of Industries signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in a ceremony held at the Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology (GIKI) on 9th September, 2013.    SOPREST is the parent body of GIK Institute and under the MoU Fatima Fertilizer Limited would donate laboratory equipment valuing Rs. 70 million for the newly launched Faculty of Chemical Engineering.   The GIK Institute has started four-year Chemical Engineering programme from the current semester.The MoU was inked by SOPREST Secretary Samiullah Marwat and Haroon Waheed, Group Head, Human Resource Division of Fatima Group of Industries.   President of SOPREST Mr. Shamsul Mulk, Rector GIK Institute Mr. Jehangir Bashar, Pro Rector (Academic) Dr Fazal Ahmad Khalid and Pro Rector (Administration and Finance) Mr. Ahsan Basir Sheikh were also present at the ceremony. ...

Dean FME, Dr. Muhammad Abid, receives Best University Teacher Award


Professor Dr. Muhammad Abid, Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at GIK Institute received the "Best Teacher Award" from the Higher Education Commission on 21st August 2013. The award is given each year on the basis of an all-round performance review which includes contirbutions to Research, Peer Review, Academic and Administrative Achievement, Professional Development as well as Community and Outreach activities. The award was conferred at a ceremony held at the Higher Education Commission in Islamabad and attended by Minister of State for Education, Training and Standards in Higher Education as well as the Chairman of the Higher Education Commission. GIKI Students Win Gold Medal in PTCL Experia Program 2013


A team including two undergraduate students of the Faculty of Electronic Engineering at GIKI, Haad Khan, and Junaid Bin Masood  won the gold medal in the PTCL Experia Summer Program 2013. Pakistan Telecommunications Company Limited (PTCL)  launched  the ‘Experia Summer Program 2013’ in June as an extensive learning and development platform for the students of top Pakistani universities. The six-week long rigorous internship program hosted a good mix of fifty technical and business students from prestigious universities including GIKI, IBA, LUMS, and NUST .The program revolved around comprehensive orientation sessions aimed at educating the students about the vision, values, business operations and strategic programs of the company. The summer internship program featured comprehensive Orientation Sessions, Guest Lecture Series by seasoned PTCL officials, coaching sessions and Project-based competitions. The students were placed in the various departments of the company including Commercial, Finance, HR and Technical functions. In regard to student placements in various compaines of repute, the efforts of Mr. Mohsin H. Akhtar (Deputy Director / Manager, University Industry Linkages & Technology Transfer) and Dr. Husnul Maab (EE internship co-ordinator, Assistant Professor EE) are also commendable. ...

GIKI Represents Pakistan at Microsoft Imagine Cup – Saint Petersburg, Russia


Team EpiC (Suleman Kazi - EE, Ihtisham ul Haq - CSW, Sherjeel Sikander - CSE Sadia Yousafzai-CSE ) made their way this summer to the tourist hub of Russia to represent Pakistan at one of the biggest student development contest. The Imagine Cup is conducted each year by Microsoft with around 70 countries being represented in this iteration. Team EpiC were declared as the Pakistan National Winners among 150+ software projects submitted from all across the country. Their project focused on “development of a human fall detection algorithm & collection of raw EEG data & its analysis”. The team were a group of 3rd year students working under the supervision of Dr. Suleman Mazhar & BISMIL Lab. Imagine Cup 2014 will be held at Microsoft Headquarters - Seattle, USA. GIKI Faculty Of Engineering Sciences Team Enters Semi-Finals of Siemens Contest


A team from the GIK Institute's Facult of Engineering Sciences has reached the semifinals of the Siemens Student Award Middle East contest 2013 .Team mentor Prof. Dr. Muhammad Hassan Sayyad  and team leader Sana Khan submitted their idea entitled “Self-Sustainable Opto-Organo-Chemical Sensors” which was shortlisted for the final competition. It may be noted that the contest was open to all BS, MS and PhD students currently studying in a College or University in the Middle East including United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Iran, Kuwait, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Yemen, Oman, Qatar, Syria and Afghanistan.
