GIKI represents Pakistan in Shell Eco Marathon Asia 2015

Shell Eco Marathon (SEM) is an annual competition aimed at achieving energy efficiency in the automobile industry with participation coming from university students throughout the world. The competition allows teams to participate in two mainstream categories: Prototype and Urban, which are further classified by the type of fuel they employ to drive their car with options including hydrogen, CNG, ethanol, battery electric and gasoline.

SEM Asia 2015 was held in Manila, Philippines between 25 February and 2 March, and received participation from 132 teams.

GIKI was represented by Kazi Sher Ahmed, Talha Khan and Ashaa Naveed as part of the Team HammerHead in the Battery Electric Prototype category. Ali Yousuf, Malik Abbas and Zaire Hasan were also the part of the team. Elucidating the course of the competition, the team manager, Kazi Sher said, “Conversion of the vehicle into a chain drive with a different motor required a different specifications lithium ion battery which could not be arranged by the SEM e-shop. We were later informed that the car will make it to the track using the lead acid batteries.”

Mentioning the overwhelming efforts the team had to put into the project, Ashaa Naveed said, “We were the smallest team participating in the contest and with pre event preparations including sponsorships and technical aspects of the car being managed by us six only, it really means a lot now that we made through this.”

Substantiating her thoughts, Talha Khan mentioned, “Our resilience took us to being one of the 15 teams to receive international broadcast. Earlier on, we received the Best Design Award of Rs. 2 lakh from Shell Pakistan. I am thankful to Airblue and Levis for supporting us. I am also thankful to Dr. Javed Chattha, Pro Rector GIKI for his support.”

Team HammerHead was sponsored by Airblue and Levis as the travel and merchandise partners respectively.
